Here
is the collection of "It's(mostly) the
Truth" columns written by my dad, George Hughey,
for our hometown newspaper, the Cherokee (Oklahoma) Republican
and Messenger . Dad was born in 1912 and died in 1995. Dad
never made his home any more than fifteen miles from the Alfalfa
County Court House in Cherokee.
This
collection comes from a scrapbook that was kept by my mom, Becky
Hughey. Without her loving care and dedication, we would not
have a complete record of dad's work. Mom passed away in 2004,
knowing that hundreds of people are still visiting this site and
enjoying dad's words.
These
commentaries appeared on Tuesday and Thursday of each week from
December, 1966 through November, 1975. Some of the articles appeared
not only in the Republican and Messenger but were reprinted
in other newspapers in Oklahoma and the surrounding states.
Some
of the articles in this collection were written by the late Larry
Hammer, owner and publisher of the newspaper. A few columns
were written by other guest writers.
We
all miss dad so very much, but we hear his voice speaking and
see his face smiling as we read his words.
The
articles are listed here as they appear on the pages of the scrapbook.
They are also listed by Topic in the Topic
Menu and by Date in the Date Menu.
Thanks
to Phyllis Hammer (http://www.cherpub.com/),
we can now actually hear dad speaking. She furnished us with a
tape of a 1974 interview between dad and a member of the Oklahoma
Historical Society. Through some computer enhancements of the
tape and with a very careful listen, most of the interview is
intelligible. You can click here
for the MP3 version of the tape. At one point, dad reads from
articles on page 234 of the scrapbook.
You can click on that page and follow the written words as dad
speaks them.
